Bryan Rachal, University Communications FLORENCE, Ala.-The University of North Alabama's Honors Program will now be known as the UNA Honors College. The UNA Board of Trustees approved the move before the end of the fall semester, with the changes going into effect once the curriculum is approved. Dr. Vince Brewton, director of the UNA Honors College, said he's excited about the transition, which will allow for continued growth in Honors education at UNA. "We are moving toward a truly innovative Honors College experience available to any student, whether in residence, international or online," Brewton said. "We believe postgraduate success comes from a combination of academic excellence and experiential learning, so we want to increase the experiential learning opportunities for our students." Founded in 2005, the UNA Honors Program provides exceptional students with a transformative educational experience that offers academic, social, co-curricular, extra-curricular, residential and financial value. Currently, there are over 320 students enrolled in the program, but UNA Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ross Alexander, said he sees that number growing. "Hopefully we'll see an increase," Alexander said. "The transition to an Honors College will provide new scholarship opportunities, which always interests prospective students. It also elevates the stature of the entire institution, as these students are the best of the best. So the more we can get on campus, the better," he said. Interested students can currently apply for fall 2018 admission. The priority application deadline is February 1.
